Architectural SSL recently announced that Lumileds won the Architectural SSL 2011 Product Innovation Award (PIA) for its Matrix Platform Advanced Technologies Integrated Light Guides series. These ultra-thin panels soften high-throughput LED lamps, enabling unprecedented light control in a compact shape. The preliminary implementation of outdoor luminaires has resulted in a lumen output of 20,000 LM at 120 lm/W, exceeding the Design Lights Consortium (DLC) Premium requirement. Viral Hazari, director of the Lumiles Matrix Platform product line, said: "Because the industry needs thinner shapes, achieving excellent consistency at high throughput is increasingly challenging, especially when combined with DLC Premium's efficiency and high throughput standards. By combining Lumileds LED, optical and application expertise, we can provide solutions that transcend market demand.
Every year, Architectural SSL honors innovative light engines, solid-state lamps and their components by awarding various categories of Product Innovation Awards (PIAs). A distinguished panel of 14 designers and lighting experts evaluates and commends products and systems based on characteristics, quality, functionality and/or performance, highlighting products and systems that exceed industry standards. The integrated light guide is awarded in the category of "components".
Integrated optical guides also provide the design flexibility that lighting manufacturers need to address indoor or outdoor applications. The selection ranges from 3/4/5 light distribution for street lamps, bat airfoil light distribution for parking lots, to Lambertian or asymmetric light distribution for indoor lighting. "Lighting designers can enter the project regardless of the choice of light distribution and know that they can qualify for DLC Premium and achieve consistent, non-glare distribution," Hazari said. As part of Matrix Platform Advanced Technologies, these integrated photoconductors are compatible with integrated driver technology, connection and control, and/or dimming electronics, reducing the time to market for new lamps. Indoor and outdoor luminaire designers can gain a larger market share while ensuring an attractive uniform light distribution.
Integrated photoconductive panels provide a variety of combinations of CCT and CRI, and they can also use Oberon Intelligent Assembly, which can achieve board-to-board consistency, to select LEDs based on parameters such as flux or Vf. In addition, Matrix Platform's Integrated Driver takes full advantage of the limited physical space in compact lamps. Overall, Matrix Platform solutions reduce inventory, minimize waste, and improve luminaire reliability.
